Bellevue Botanical Gardens Engagement | Essie + Austin
Essie + Austin’s Summer Engagement at Bellevue Botanical Gardens
Some engagement sessions feel like a carefully planned checklist. Others feel like wandering into a story you didn’t know you were about to tell. Essie and Austin’s engagement session was absolutely the second one and honestly, those are my favorite.

When couples ask what it’s like to work with me as their Bellevue Engagement Photographer, this is the kind of day I’m talking about. Easy. Exploratory. Full of genuine connection. No rushing, no stiff poses, just two people experiencing a place together while I quietly document what unfolds.
Hi, I’m Markie, your PNW Wedding Photographer.
I’m equal parts sentimental storyteller and calm-in-the-chaos guide. I’ve been photographing weddings for over a decade, documenting everything from backyard celebrations to full wedding days layered with tradition, faith, and generations of love. My approach is rooted in connection, not performance, capturing your day as it actually felt AND looked.
Weddings aren’t about perfection; they’re about the people. About binding yourselves together with God, honoring the community that shaped you, and creating a day that reflects the life you’re building, not the expectations placed on you. Here, we believe wedding photography should preserve legacy, emotion, and meaning, because these moments deserve to be remembered long after the cake is gone and the dress is packed away.
Because your love story is worth remembering exactly as it unfolded.

A Love Story That Started in Two Parked Cars
The first time I met Essie wasn’t in a cute coffee shop or over wine, it was over a video consultation, both of us sitting in the front seats of our cars. One of those very “this is real life” moments. Within minutes, it felt less like a vendor meeting and more like chatting with a friend you somehow instantly click with.
We talked through their vision, their personalities, and what mattered most to them. My original suggestion for their engagement session leaned into Austin’s favorite burger place (because food + memories is always a solid idea). But Austin gently vetoed that plan. He wanted somewhere quieter, somewhere they could exist together without worrying about bumping into people they knew.
That’s when Essie suggested Bellevue Botanical Gardens.
And here’s my confession as a seasoned Pacific Northwest photographer: I didn’t even know it existed. Which feels wild considering it’s tucked right in the middle of the city, quietly doing its thing, full of trails, gardens, and hidden corners that feel like you’ve stepped out of Bellevue entirely. It turns out Essie and Austin were introducing me to a location that would quickly become one of my favorite spots for engagement sessions and a place I now recommend often as a Bellevue Engagement Photographer.

Wandering Without a Timeline (The Best Kind of Session)
We met on a warm summer evening, just before sunset, that golden window where everything feels softer and slower. None of us realized just how expansive Bellevue Botanical Gardens truly is. Miles of trails. Tall trees that make you forget you’re anywhere near city traffic. Gardens that shift mood every few steps. And instead of trying to “hit” specific spots, we just walked.
This is where documentary-style photography really shines. We weren’t racing the light or bouncing between predetermined locations. We were hiking. Exploring. Laughing when we realized we’d somehow covered nearly the entire Bellevue Botanical Gardens park without meaning to.
Golden hour gently faded into blue hour as we moved from lush gardens to a striking honeycomb structure that felt both modern and whimsical. Essie and Austin moved so naturally together… easy hand holds, quiet conversations, shared looks that didn’t need direction.
One of my favorite moments came when we stumbled upon the hobbit door. Yes. A literal hobbit door.
It immediately sparked a conversation about how Essie made Austin watch The Lord of the Rings… or maybe it was the other way around. Honestly, the details blurred because we were laughing too much. That’s the magic of these sessions. The photos aren’t just about how things look, they’re about the memories that get baked into them.
As a Bellevue Engagement Photographer, this is always my goal: to give couples images that feel like them, not a performance of what engagement photos are “supposed” to look like.
Bridges, Gardens, and a Little Bit of Chaos

From there, the evening unfolded like a highlight reel of unexpected moments. We wandered through the Japanese garden, where everything slowed down even more. The quiet there feels intentional, like the space itself asks you to breathe differently. Essie’s dress moved softly with every step, and Austin stayed close, occasionally leaning in to say something that made her laugh.
Eventually, we found our way to the Bellevue Botanical Gardens suspension bridge. And Austin, being the adventurous soul that he is, immediately wanted to hang off it. I wish I could say I encouraged this for the sake of “the shot,” but instead, we gently talked him out of it. Documentary photographer does not mean I’m down to photograph your dangerous stunts (unless of course, you have insurance for that..)
We kept going, discovering fields of yellow dandelions that felt straight out of a summer daydream. Hidden ponds tucked away behind winding paths. Moments where Essie and Austin forgot about the camera entirely, which is always when the best images happen.
And finally, as the light dipped lower and the air cooled, we ended near the waterfall at the entrance. The sound of rushing water, the last glow of the evening, the sense that we’d shared something special, not just taken photos.
Sessions like this remind me why I love being a Bellevue Engagement Photographer. It’s not about perfect conditions or knowing every location ahead of time. It’s about being present, adaptable, and willing to follow the story as it unfolds.
Why Bellevue Botanical Gardens Is a Hidden Gem for Engagement Sessions
I’ve photographed engagements all over the Pacific Northwest, and Bellevue Botanical Gardens quickly earned a permanent place on my “quietly incredible” list. It’s ideal for couples who want variety without driving all over the place. You get gardens, forests, architectural elements, water features, and wide-open spaces, all within one location. It’s family-friendly, engagement-friendly, and perfect for summer evenings when the light lingers just long enough to work its magic.
More importantly, it allows couples to do something together. Walk. Explore. Pause. Laugh. Those actions naturally create moments that feel authentic on camera. And that’s a big part of how we work at Markie Jones Photography. Whether it’s an engagement session or a wedding day, we’re not there to manufacture moments, we’re there to notice them. To quietly document the in-between glances, the shared jokes, the way someone reaches for their person without thinking.
If you’re newly engaged and searching for a Bellevue Engagement Photographer who values connection over perfection, who’s just as excited about exploring a location as you are, and who believes your story deserves to be told honestly, you’re in the right place.

Essie and Austin’s session is a perfect reminder that sometimes the best locations, the best light, and the best memories come from trusting your instincts and being open to a little adventure. And if you’re anything like them, willing to wander a bit and see where the path leads, I’d love to be there to document it.
