The Ultimate Guide to the Best Places to Elope in Washington

Maybe you’ve always wondered where the best places to elope in Washington are, or maybe, you’re dreaming of a wedding day that feels like you two, minus the 200-person guest list and the pressure of seating charts? Maybe something a little wild, a little magical and a whole lot you. Well friend, let me grab my hiking boots (and my camera) because Washington State is basically a choose-your-own-elopement-adventure wonderland.

With rugged peaks, misty beaches, vibrant forests, and alpine lakes that look like a Bob Ross painting IRL, Washington is the elopement jackpot. And as someone who lives to document love stories in epic places, I’m spilling all the tea on the best places to elope in Washington from iconic national parks to tucked-away gems that’ll take your breath away.

Hi, I’m Markie, Your PNW Elopement Photographer.

I’m equal parts “homebody” and “outdoorsy”, so in 2023, my husband Jake bought me a travel trailer. Now my four kids and I take our “home” on the road every summer as a way to explore the beautiful PNW and find the best places to elope in Washington. I’ve been photographing elopements and adventure engagements my entire career, from tiny houses to mountaintops, for couples who choose intention over expectation.

Eloping isn’t about doing less; it’s about centering your marriage, binding yourselves together with God, and stepping away from the chaos society insists belongs in a wedding. Here, we wholeheartedly believe eloping doesn’t mean cheap; it means choosing your marriage, fully and unapologetically, from the very beginning.

Because you’re life’s greatest adventure.

Mount Rainier National Park: The Crown Jewel of the PNW

Best places to elope in Washington

Let’s start with the obvious: Mount Rainier is number one on the best places to elope in Washington list and it’s the place for a romantic, moody, and downright breathtaking elopement. This iconic volcano stands tall and proud, like it’s photobombing every single frame in the best way possible.

Best time to elope here? Summer. Specifically mid-June to early October, when the wildflowers are showing off and the roads to places like Sunrise (the highest point you can drive to) are actually open. Sunrise is one of my favorite overlooks, it’s got those alpine meadows and that crisp, golden morning light that makes your photos look like a fairy tale.

Pro tip: Elope on a weekday at sunrise (yep, the name says it all). You’ll beat the crowds and have space to breathe, whisper your vows, and maybe ugly cry a little with no judgment.

And heads up: Rainier gets snowed in from mid-fall through spring. While it’s still gorgeous (hello, winter wonderland vibes), it does limit where you can go. If snow is your jam, bundle up but be sure you know how to safely navigate the terrain and if you don’t consider an offsite location or hiring a mountain guide.

Just outside Mount Rainier National Park, there are a ton of other beautiful locations including The Naches Loop Trail (a 3.5-4 mile hike, only available June-October), Suntop Lookout (drivable in the summer, Closed Nov-June) and High Rock Fire Lookout (a 3.3 mile HARD hike, with avalanche warnings during winter) which is pictured above. Be sure to consider logistics (like how you’re packing your wedding dress) when you choose a location and if possible, consider a “trial hike” before your wedding day.

Olympic National Park: One Park, So Many Vibes

Olympic National Park is basically the cool older cousin on our best places to elope in Washington list. It’s got range. I’m talking rugged coastline, alpine lakes, moss-draped forests, and even a dash of mountain drama. It’s like five states in one park.

Here are some of the most swoon-worthy elopement spots inside Olympic National Park:

  • Ruby Beach: Featuring driftwood, dramatic rocks, and moody skies, Ruby Beach is exactly the drama you’re looking for.
  • La Push: Twilight fans, you already know, and you’re here for the romantasy. With Forks nearby, you can find plenty of cute little motels for getting ready and embrace the whole vampire vibe.
  • Lake Crescent: One of our favorite spots gives you the best of both worlds. Beautiful rocky beaches with towering trees in the background. Foggy mountain views and hidden trails that lead to waterfalls. Lake Crescent features its own beautiful lodge; consider staying a while.
  • Cape Flattery: The northwesternmost point in the contiguous US? Yes, that’s a flex in itself, but the beautiful views and rugged walkways offer true PNW vibes while still keeping your dress somewhat clean.
  • Hurricane Ridge: Boasting some of the most epic panoramic views of the Olympics and hiking trails for all levels of fitness, this area is incredible for elopements and engagements. Keep in mind that seasonal road closures happen and extra planning is needed to ensure everyone’s safety.

Olympic is gorgeous year-round, but fall is chef’s kiss for avoiding summer tourists and still catching decent weather. Just know that rain is part of the Olympic charm, embrace it like the PN-Westerner you are.

North Cascades National Park: The Road Less Traveled (and Worth Every Step)

North Cascades National Park is definitely not a secret, but it is one of the best places to elope in Washington (and most people know it! During our last elopement here, we came across not one, but FOUR other couples also eloping at various points on the trails). If Mount Rainier and Olympic are the popular kids, North Cascades is the indie artist making magic in the background. And let me tell you, it delivers like one too making it the third pick on our list of best places to elope in Washington.

Towering peaks, alpine lakes, wildflower meadows, and the kind of peace that makes your soul take a deep breath. This is one of my personal favorites, not just as a photographer, but as a human who loves a good mountain view and a quiet moment. Tons of beautiful spaces include Artist’s Point (the most popular elopement location) to Picture Lake, this area is prime for exploring.

Best time to elope here? July through September, when higher-elevation roads finally wake up from their snow naps. Fall can be stunning too, if you’re down for a little mist, moody skies, and fewer people around. Just pack layers and prepare for a weather surprise or two (this is Washington, after all). Keep in mind that the road closes routinely from October to November to prepare for winter, and the upper roads past Mt Baker Ski Area are typically closed from November to June every year.

Bonus tip: Don’t overlook the Mount Baker Wilderness. It’s nearby and packed with trails, views, and alpine glow that’ll knock your wool socks off. There are even a few secret spaces on the south end of the park that would make for epic elopement shots.

Permits, Paperwork & Practical Stuff (Because We’re Responsible Adults… Right?)

Okay, deep breath; let’s talk logistics. If you’re planning for one of the best places to elope in Washington, chances are you’re going to need a permit. Every park has its own system, so it’s worth checking well in advance (or better yet, letting us help you through it. Logistics planning is included in all our elopement packages). Most parks require that the couple apply for the special use permit when applicable, but we can help you do the research and paperwork. We just can’t apply for you.

You’ll also need a Washington State marriage license, which you can grab from any county auditor’s office. It’s good for 60 days, but you need to wait at least three days before using it. So don’t go applying the day before your big day. Note: you do not need to be getting married in the county where you obtain your marriage license. We recommend obtaining your marriage license from the county you LIVE in, and this will be the county you’ll need to return the completed license to.

And don’t forget: even in the best places to elope in Washington, you’ll need an officiant and two witnesses. Lucky for you, Jake is ordained and can officiate your ceremony (he’s got the charisma for it, too), and I’m always down to sign as a witness. You’ll still need one more, so if you have a favorite person or couple, I highly recommend bringing them for the ceremony portion of your wedding day.

Final Thoughts from Your Elopement Hype Woman

Eloping in Washington isn’t just about pretty pictures (though trust me, you’ll get those). It’s about slowing down. Making space for just the two of you. Soaking in the views, the vows, the big feelings and maybe eating cake by a lake while wrapped in a blanket.

Whether you’re hiking a trail at dawn, standing barefoot in the surf, or dancing in a field of wildflowers, this day is about you. And I’d be honored to document it with all the heart and humor I’ve got. So, if you’re dreaming of an elopement that’s a little wild, a lot romantic, and totally YOU: Washington is calling.

Let’s make it epic.
