The Wedding Tradition of Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed and Something Blue

The Wedding Tradition saying goes:
Something Old, Something New,
Something Borrowed, Something Blue,
and a silver sixpence in her shoe.

This wedding tradition rhyme dates back to the Victorian era. There are a lot of variations on this tradition, and it seems that no two brides ever honor it just the same way. Anna, a June 2014 bride, had her grandmother’s broach incorporated in her wedding bouquet for her something old. Many of our brides have considered their dresses to be their something new, though some have instead used their shoes, headpieces or even bought special jewelry to wear with their dresses. Jewelry tends to be the most popular item to borrow, though we’ve seen brides borrow shoes, tiaras or even heard of them borrowing dresses! Tara, a July 2015 bride, honored her late father with her something blue; a heart cut out of his favorite blue shirt. Incase you’re wondering the sixpence is a penny, in case you weren’t aware. Placed in the bride’s shoe, it’s said that the sixpence will bring her a life filled with good fortune. I’ve never seen anyone who actually has a silver sixpence though, as they’ve been out of production for quite some time.

The possibilities for this tradition are endless

From blue stones in your rings, to blue shoes…. borrowed dresses to borrowed gems…. There is really nothing stopping you from using this tradition to add just a touch of spunk to your big day. It’s pretty much the most fun tradition ever, and it helps make your day, all yours.
