Family Portraits: Tips from Your Trusted PNW Family Photographer

Planning family portraits sometimes feels like an unnecessary chore, but family portraits are more than just pictures; they are a celebration of your family’s unique story, capturing the love, laughter, and connections that define you. As a PNW Family Photographer, we can honestly tell you that planning ahead is crucial to ensuring your family portrait session is both fun and memorable. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll dive into the essential steps and considerations for preparing your family portraits, helping you create beautiful images that will freshen up your home and your family will cherish for years to come.

Fun Family Portraits

Choosing the Right Time and Location

The Pacific Northwest is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, and we love the variety of stunning backdrops each season provides. From the lush greenery of forests to the tranquil beauty of beaches, you can have it all, just keep in mind what each season will provide for your family portraits.

Summer Family Session

Spring

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your family portraits with the beauty of blooming flowers, lush greenery, and golden evening light. After months of winter hibernation, the world comes alive again; just like my boys, who suddenly have endless energy to run and explore. Spring sessions are some of my favorites, whether a cozy indoor session or snagging the umbrellas to head outside. A spring session captures the season’s magic, and we love finding little spots with a pretty cherry blossom tree or row of beautiful florals to help capture the season of spring.

Summer

Summer is all about sunshine, adventure, and making memories. With school out and longer days ahead, summer offers the perfect opportunity to slow down and document the love and laughter that define your family. Think barefoot giggles, sun-kissed cheeks, and the kind of carefree moments that are always remembered for years to come. A beach session is always a solid go-to, but if you want more of an adventure, consider a quick nature hike. If Summer Family Portraits are your jam, let’s get you scheduled for those summer nights!

Fall

Don’t tell Spring, but Fall is my favorite season of the year. It’s the season of cozy sweaters, crisp air, and golden leaves. As the world transforms into a canvas of rich reds, oranges, and yellows, your family’s love and laughter will shine against nature’s most breathtaking backdrop. There are so many incredible family activities to use as a part of your session from kicking up leaves, sharing some cocoa, and visiting a pumpkin patch to pick out that perfect gourd. Whether it’s an apple orchard, a forest trail, or an open field bathed in autumn light, we’ll create a memory together and those timeless images you crave.

Winter

Our winter focus tends to swirl around the holidays, but that just adds to the pure magic of Winter family portraits. We may not be snowflake lane, but whether it’s a snowy mountain backdrop, a charming evergreen forest, or a festive in-home session by the fireplace, winter offers a unique and heartwarming setting to capture your family’s love. Let’s head to a tree farm or just snuggle by the fireplace surrounded by the ones you love.

Coordinating Outfits for a Cohesive Look

One of the most frequent questions we encounter as a PNW Family Photographer is about outfit choices. The key is to coordinate without being overly matchy-matchy. Opting for a color palette that harmonizes with the natural surroundings and reflects your family’s style will help you to love your photos in the end. Earthy tones, soft pastels, or even bold colors can work beautifully in the PNW’s diverse settings. Encourage each family member to wear something they feel comfortable and confident in, and steer clear of large logos or busy patterns that might detract from the overall image. Remember, the goal is to create a cohesive look that enhances the visual appeal of your portraits.

Preparing the Little Ones

Children often steal the show in family portraits with their infectious energy and spontaneity. However, it’s crucial to prepare them for the session to ensure a smooth experience. Talk to your kids about what to expect and involve them in the planning process, whether it’s choosing their outfits or deciding on a special location. Bring along snacks, toys, or comfort items to keep them happy and engaged during the shoot. We personally carry a few fun toys (like a squeaky pig and our duck calls) but if your kiddo has a favorite fun toy that might balance on my camera, feel free to bring that too! I’m all for any attention keepers we can find!

Timing and Scheduling

Timing is a critical factor in family portraits. Schedule your session at a time when your family is typically at their best. For everyone’s sake be sure to avoid nap times or mealtimes (I too get hangry if we’re scheduled at lunch time). As much as I love to recommend booking your session during the golden hours of early morning or late afternoon when the lighting is soft and flattering, that’s not always the best-case scenario, especially when children are involved. Allowing your family’s schedule to dictate proper timing ensures that everyone is relaxed and ready to enjoy the moment.

Communicating with Your Photographer

A successful family portrait session hinges on open and clear communication with your photographer. Share your vision, expectations, and any specific shots you have in mind. As a husband-and-wife team, we value building a rapport with our clients, making the experience enjoyable and stress-free. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or seek advice on any aspect of the session. We will be sure to lead your family through the session, but if you’re dreaming of specific images, be sure to let us know!

Incorporating Personal Touches

Personal touches can elevate your family portraits from beautiful to extraordinary. Your session is about your family, and if that means ditching the idea of an outdoor hike in favor of baking cookies at home, let’s do it! You can also consider incorporating meaningful props or locations that hold sentimental value for your family. Whether it’s a favorite park, a family heirloom, or even your beloved pet, these elements add depth and personality to your images. As your PNW Family Photographer, we love capturing these authentic moments that showcase your family’s individuality. Personal touches make your portraits uniquely yours, creating images that resonate with your family’s story.

Relax and Enjoy the Moment

Finally, the most important tip for your family portrait session is to relax and enjoy the moment. The best photos often come from genuine interactions and laughter. Trust us to guide you and capture those candid moments that reflect the love and joy within your family. Remember, these portraits are a celebration of your unique bond, and the experience should be as enjoyable as the final images themselves. Embrace the spontaneity of the moment and let your family’s personality shine through.

Planning for the Future

Family portraits are not just about capturing the present but also about creating a legacy for future generations. Consider making family portraits an annual tradition, documenting the growth and changes within your family over the years. This not only strengthens family bonds but also provides a visual history that can be cherished by future generations. As your dedicated PNW Family Photographer, we’re here to support you in preserving these precious memories, ensuring that your family’s story is beautifully told through each portrait.

Early planning for your family portraits is the key to creating a stress-free and enjoyable experience. By considering factors like timing, location, outfits, personal touches, and future planning, you’ll be well-prepared to capture beautiful memories with your loved ones. As your trusted PNW Family Photographer, we’re here to guide you every step of the way, ensuring that your family portraits are a true reflection of your unique story and the love that binds you together.
